The “International Tokyo Toy Show 2008” was held at the Tokyo Big Sight Exhibition Center from 19th to 22nd of June 2008. This 4 day show was split into 2 days for trade and 2 days for public attendance. There were approximately 20,000 trade members in attendances including 18 foreign exhibitors and 800 members from the press. There was an overwhelming amount of interest from the public with estimated attendance of 145,000 during the two public days.
The Japanese Toy Industry reports, that it had been a tough domestic market for the past 4 years with the number of births declining in Japan. However, the Toy Industry is now happy to report sales have increased for the first time in four years in 2007.
Segments of the industry that had remarkable growth was “Card Gaming” in 2007 with Girl toy’s, cooking toys and beaded toys showed significant gains. Boy’s character toy segment also grew significantly with miniature car and train toy following close. High tech toy’s sales decreased in 2007 to half sales of 2006 figures, due to no new winning games.
Educational toy segment sales remain very stable, imported bed and wooden toys do very well in this segment.
We anticipate sales growth will continue in Natural material toys, Educational toys and High Tech toys for this year 2008.
